RAMBLING CLUB

Founded 1908

2008 was the Centenary Year of York's oldest surviving walking organization the York CHA & HF Rambling Club.

We hold rambles every three weeks, each with a choice of walks of varying length as well as regular social events and short holiday breaks.

The Club holds a wealth of archive material and old photographs, some of which have been included in a commemorative book, entitled 100 YEARS OF RAMBLING,. The book charts the history of the Club and includes photographs and personal memories, some going back many years. It has been researched, written, edited and produced entirely by Club members – truly a book about the members, by the members for the members.

Some of our members were associated with the pioneering of the Pennine Way, the Lyke Wake Walk and were responsible for founding one of the country’s first Youth Hostels in the village of Crayke in the Howardian Hills.

Castle Howard Christmas Meal Ramble

During the centenary year many of the walks carried out during the past 100 years were followed yet once again.Two members walked 100 miles from Grassington to Robin Hood's Bay during April joined in stages by other members and on the final day by many of the Club’s membership- (see photo's)

An evening ramble in June took us to the tiny St. Mary, Lead Church (often referred to as the Ramblers Church) in a field near Towton where the Dean of York joined us for a short service.

One walk in October was a fun day out when members walked in period dress.Also in October, the main formal event a Celebratory Dinner took place at the York Racecourse.

Holiday to North Wales 2007

A record number of club members attended the planned 4 Day holiday to North Wales which took place between Wednesday 24th January and Saturday 27th January 2007.

Transport, accommodation and most meals were provided and we stayed at ‘The County Hotel’ which was situated on the Promenade at Llandudno.
The holiday included an excursion plus, for those who wished attend, an optional tour. We also arranged our own walks on both the Thursday and Friday taking in ‘The Great Orme’ and ‘Conwy Mountain’. In the evenings we both provided our own entertainment and took advantage of that that was provided by the holiday company.

We were quite lucky with the weather the Thursday in particular was a very nice day and the holiday proved to be another successful event.

York CHA & HF Rambling Club was founded during October 1908 and we will be celebrating its centenary in 2008. Unfortunately, the early records of the Club are no longer available to provide a detailed account of the formative years. In 1942 the Club’s documents which were lodged in York’s Guildhall were destroyed when it was hit by an incendiary bomb. At present we are compiling a booklet of the club’s history and we are appealing to members past and present to help by providing copies of any photographs or information they may have, the club has also had associations with many other groups in the past and it would be great if anything were available from any of them.
